How do you charge for in-stock donors?

I charge for replacement cost. So even if I have it in stock, I look on ebay, donordrives, etc. and see what it's going to cost for me to replace the drive. That's the fair market value, so why charge less than that? Do you sell a car for practically nothing just because you already own it or...

    M.2 Data Recovery

As an update to this ancient thread. PC-3000 SSD works fine with M.2 SSDs so long as they are the ones that have actual SATA lanes. If it's a PCIe only, we're going to have to either do chip off recovery or wait for a new tool to arrive.

Really? I think they can be done, I've definitely done it with families later than Sadle G6. I think you've just got to be sure that your SA regions match in the ROM (which they often don't). But, regardless of that, it's usually unnecessary to do SHS on these because they've typically got 4...

You only need to transfer the one chip which is labeled U12 to make the SATA PCB compatible with the drive. I don't think he was suggesting copying their tools, just modeling some open source ones anyone can use. I've actually been considering this, but to get the necessary tolerances it's have to be printed on an SLA printer such as the Form 2. Plastic extrusion isn't precise enough. SLA printers...

Error Trying To Recover From HDD Clone

I totally understand. Data recovery is not for the faint of heart, and mistakes happen all the time that can lead to irreversible data loss. Perhaps it'd be worth considering hiring a data recovery company to handle it. If you're able to image using ddrescue at all, it's likely still a sub...

How to Clone a Hard Drive With Bad Sectors Using ddrescue

Most likely the drive just froze due to hitting a bad sector and was able to resume after you power cycled it. If it hangs again, try just unplugging the SATA casble (the data one) but leave the power connected. Often that'll allow the drive to continue imaging without the added stress of...

    Hello all

Welcome. I've removed your signature link for now (the one you manually typed in). Once you have enough approved posts you can create an actual signature in your profile and even put one link in it. But, I suspect this is just a SPAM post created by some bot and we'll never hear from you...

    WD HDD Head Swap Experiences

It likely is the PCB that's blown, but it may also have blown the internal preamp. It won't hurt anything on WD to attempt using the PCB without ROM transfer. It might work, or it might not work. If it doesn't work, then you can try transferring the U12 after to see if that resolves it. If...

    Toshiba Head Swap Experiences

Sure, I converted this to a sticky. (I also modified the thread title to keep it consistent with the others) I'm surprised that worked! That's quite a stretch. What prompted you to attempt using this drive?

    MK4025GAS

Does the drive have a parking ramp? I haven't seen one of these in a while so I can't remember.

    HDDSuperClone

You could start a DR business for $20K if you're OK with only being able to handle 30-40% of cases. I'd suspect I've invested around $200K in just equipment. It's not necessarily the big items that are expensive, it's the thousands of little items that really add up.

    WD HDD Head Swap Experiences

Given that those are made the same day on the same site, the PCB may work without even needing to transfer the ROM. I've often seen this work on such an old model. Often within a week is close enough for the adaptives to work. But, if not, you'll just need to transfer the U12 chip as pclab...

    MK4025GAS

For heads matching, you might want to go with a MK8025GAS. It'll probably have extra heads, but that's OK. You'll want one with code HDD2188 _ ZK01 _ (don't worry about the E or S too much). I know yours is code HDD2190 but that's the code for the 40Gb version not the 80Gb version. If you do...

Best Free Android Data Recovery Software to Get Deleted Data Back

I would not recommend a single one of those programs. They're all just spammers, just like the guy who posted this link to his lame blog.

    MK4025GAS

Toshiba drives are generally pretty easy to match for heads. Often you can get away with just matching the model, but if you post a picture of the label we can tell you other things that'd be good to try matching.

HGST Families for Rebranded WD Gold Models

So I'm starting this sticky topic to keep track of WD Gold drives that are really re-branded HGST ARM model hard drives. Unfortunately, I have none collected yet, but I'm working on that... Does anyone know what family works with WD4002FYYZ-01B7CB1?

Seagate and Micron Team Up to Make SSDs

Seagate has been buying up a few flash companies. I think they're cutting costs on their HDDs so they can push the profits toward this end. Even they can see the writing on the wall that spinners have a limited time left. I just wonder if they'll dump the Seagate name after all they've done...

Identify WD Marvel Families by Code After The Dash

I'm already seeing a number of mistakes in DFL's list. The third one listed for example: WD3200BEVT-00ZAT0 is definitely Mercury not Zephyr. It's probably just a list based on their profiles backups (which is how I started out too) that hasn't really been fine-tuned. I know mine is still a...

Yeah, for me the $560 or so dollars I paid quickly paid for itself. I had run the demo on a few cases where I was getting terrible results (mostly HFS+ ccases) in other software and it was able to rebuild near perfect file/folder structure. That's what prompted me to buy it and I'm glad I did...

List of All Western Digital PCB Numbers

haha, I guess I forgot about this thread. I've got a running spreadsheet of most my inventory now, so I haven't needed a list of what PCBs go with which families. I should probably go through one day and update all this.

    HFS catalogue file corrupted

I think I just answered this on another thread, but anyway. Yes, I have both programs. Recovery Explorer is just a newer version of UFS Explorer which I think they've now abandoned for updates. It's got more features now and it's a lot more stable (no more random crashing like I had with UFS).

Suggestions for Mac recovery software and info on headers

They are the same company and it's really the same program. UFS is just an older version that appears to be abandoned. Recovery Explorer is a newer version with more new features such as APFS support. R-Explorer also seems to be much more stable than UFS ever was. I highly recommend Recovery...

    Adapter for SD5SE2-128G-1002E SSD

Oddly enough, if I force this thing into the full-size mSATA slot, it does work. It's super tight and didn't want to go in since the notch is a bit smaller but I guess the necessary pins still line up. I only decided to try that after seeing this image from Sintech on PC-Adapter.net which is...

    Adapter for SD5SE2-128G-1002E SSD

    Adapter for SD5SE2-128G-1002E SSD

Does anyone know where I can get an adapter for this Sandisk SSD model SD5SE2-128G-1002E ? I thought I finally had every adapter on the planet, but this one I apparently don't have. It's just like mSATA 18 pin, but it's smaller total width than that. I even tried ordering one specifically...

    WHS Server Recovery

That's the hard part there. Personally, I'd use PC-3000's Data Extractor software to generate a report of which files are affected by bad sectors. Then replace any that are needed for Windows to boot (if it were my job to do that, though I generally don't I leave that up to their IT staff to...

HTS545050A7E380 stay busy after head swap

Yeah, I was thinking I should mention that too. You need to match the 0J part number. That other number is usually just a Dell, HP, whoever replacement part number.

HTS545050A7E380 stay busy after head swap

I said: You didn't use one with the same MLC in either attempt. You're just trying drives that are too far off specs wise. Hitachi's are pretty forgiving when it comes to date and site, even capacity. But, you've got to match some specs. MLC I'm pretty sure (and I know someone will argue...

    WHS Server Recovery

There's no way I know of to target just the used sectors using ddrescue. There are other programs that can do that, but none that handle bad sectors well. I do know that the developer of hddsuperclone (user maximus on this forum) is working on implementing that into his program which does...

  341. Jared

    HFS catalogue file corrupted

This is very true. But, there are nice people out there (or should I say...on here) that are willing to help you learn. You've just got to be willing to share what you're billing out to the customer with whoever is giving the remote support. :D
  342. Jared

    Seagate F3 Terminal Command Set

Yeah, I would assume that's not actually accessing the ROM. Otherwise, PC-3000 wouldn't have to enter boot ROM code mode to write the ROM each time.
  343. Jared

    WHS Server Recovery

Correct The -f trigger is just needed since you're writing to a drive rather than a file. You must have used the -f trigger or ddrescue would have spit out an error and refused to clone to a physical disk. But, no it won't overwrite what you already recovered if you're using the same log...

  345. Jared

HTS545050A7E380 stay busy after head swap

Don't forget too, you might be able to use a different capacity drive as long as all heads are present. I've used 320Gb drives to recover 500Gb like that, just as long as it has all necessary heads. When matching across capacity the MLC will all match except for one digit.
  346. Jared

    HDDSuperClone

We're only talking a couple hundred $$$. That's not a lot of money to someone already doing data recovery. You'd be surprised the money we spend on programs and things we don't necessarily need, but that makes our job easier or faster.
  347. Jared

    Seagate F3 Terminal Command Set

Is that actually reading/writing the ROM from the PCB though? Or just reading a system file copy of it? I'd assume that writing 32A back just using the F3 T>w32 command wouldn't actually alter the physical ROM.
