Navigating merchant coding issues with corporate wellness stipend cards?

My company recently switched to a digital-first lifestyle benefits platform that gives us a monthly stipend for "wellness and remote work" expenses. I tried buying an ergonomic chair from a specialized local furniture maker, but the virtual card declined because the merchant category code didn't match their approved list. How do you all get around these strict vendor classifications?

Sometimes you have to buy through a larger marketplace like Amazon or a major office supply store. Their merchant codes are usually pre-approved across all categories. I had the same issue trying to use my allowance at an independent yoga studio that coded as a generic consultant.

The digital cards are incredibly strict about how vendors are classified by the major credit card networks. While researching how different platforms handle these backend coding mismatches and looking up the Benepass customer service number in discussions about virtual card authorizations, I realized the blocking process is mostly automated by the payment gateway. Ultimately, I had to ask the local artisan to send me a formal digital invoice via PayPal, which processed perfectly under a broader business category code.
