In my opinion, Recuva is garbage. At the very least, it is only designed as an undelete program and not equipped to handle a formatted failing hard drive.

We always return client data in the same format as we received it, with the exception of Linux file systems and special requests from the clients. We have a couple of MacBooks and macdrive.

NVMe is PCIe only and does not have native SATA communications. So, such a device does not exist. But, there are some NVMe to USB 3 options out there or PCIe card adapters.

With a Samsung, you should be able to get a PCB from an identical drive (same firmware) and swap without needing to transfer the ROM.

It could be that this one has a newer firmware version, making the ACE loaders outdated. Even if you don't have tech support with ACE, they will reply to questions on their tech support system (ts.acelaboratory.com). Maybe the MRT SSD will support it. :lol:

I've always found that a dry swab is better than 99.9% IPA. Liquid gets contaminated as soon as it touches the dirty surface. Smudging it around doesn't make it any better. So, maybe a damp swab to get some of the debris free, then a dry swap to clean it off.

And your point is? You are wasting everyone's time until you get a PCB with the original ROM on it. You can change the PCB and heads 1 million times, post 10 billion questions and do a rain dance, but there is absolutely nothing that will work without first getting the original ROM.

That is irrelevant with a drive that is showing the wrong SN. Your first step is to get the original ROM with the match SN, otherwise, everything else you do is a waste of time.

If the SN is wrong, someone likely swapped the PCB. You need the original ROM to have any chance to recover a Seagate.

These programs all suck and are only good to a user doesn't know any better. They are better at spamming forums than data recovery.

Power data recovery is more spamming garbage.

If you run a full scan with R-Studio and aren't seeing any data being found, the odds are that TRIM wiped the sectors on your SSD, making recovery of the data impossible.

What about the .tmp version of the file above it? Assuming that there was no data written back after the file was deleted, you may need a better recovery program to handle recovering fragmented MP3 files.

I'm pretty sure that you have to go old school with that series of drive. It existed long before head tools were being sold. You would be wise to buy a couple donors and a few similar working drives to play with before you jump in with the client's drive.

You could clone the drive in its encrypted state and then connect it to a western digital USB to sata bridge with the same USB Controller as the original PCB..or, now that you have it working, put the original PCB back and clone it that way.

If you have access to module 25, it should work. But, the problem is that it sometimes works and sometimes doesn't work with MRT. That is the nature of a bug...not working when it should. I believe there are a few threads about it on their lackluster forums over the past couple years about it.

Yup...I wrote the preamp details on the top cover, after I added it to the inventory. Sadly, the other drive I have listed has the B7 04 preamp, but I just used it and it would appear that the donor heads did not survive. I suspect that the D2 and B7 preamps are interchangeable with this model...

This video is quite old and I've done it hundreds of times. The drive will degrade fairly quickly with the top head floating over that scratch, but it is possible to image most, if not all of the other surfaces before that happens.

Chkdsk fixes the mft by dropping inaccessible records. Basically, it deletes the files.

I've attained the higher speeds with my existing PC3K TTL with newer Seagates.

The CSV is a list of what can be recovered from the drive and the VRFS is a log generated by UFS saving the state of the program so you can pickup where you left off. Neither file contains any data from the patient drive.

So, you don't even hear it try to spin? Did you open and inspect it internally to be sure the spindle isn't stuck or the heads on the platters? If the PCB suddenly dies, sometimes the heads don't make it to parking position before the spindle stops spinning.

Some drives won't spin with dead preamp. Also, try another PCB without ROM transfer just to see if it spins. You could also block the heads to see if it spins that way too.

I find that sometimes the client is led to believe the cause due to misdiagnosis by their technicians. That is, the technician says that the drive isn't spinning and assumes that it is because it dropped. So, he tells his client that the drive was dropped and not spinning and then refers them...

This means that there are likely issues reading module 1 off the surface: 1. Damaged heads 2. Damaged module 3. Damaged surface

No, it shouldn't matter which host OS you are using, but the MacOS terminal is the Unix equivalent of a DOS prompt and nothing like hyperterminal.

PC3000 only produces a text list of damaged files...not good files. So, we always save the recovery out, splitting good and damaged into folders of those names and then use SNAP2HTML to generate a file listing for client review. DeepSpar generates a SNAP2HTML-like report too.

You dropped the drive, resulting in physical damage to the heads/surface. You are lucky that it is reading at all. If the data is of value to you, send it to a data recovery professional before it degrades to the point of being unrecoverable. If the data isn't worth, even a few hundred bucks...

It looks like you are on the right track with allow other apps do the file system recovery portion of the work. One thing that would be useful is to tell hddsuperclone to image used sectors by bitmap.

You can update for more than 1 year or let it expire and renew it under the discount next year. Mine expires every June, but I always wait until December every year to update it at the discounted rate.

PC3000 won't ID the family of any SED locked drive while it is locked. How could it ID if it is locked out of the SA.

Seagate Free Play drives usually require a head change, sometimes multiples, and the heads are usually expensive. Not a DIY or cheap recovery most of the time.

For the DE Tasks, you can do so through the first menu when loading DE. If you want to change the path to !Profile, you will need to change it during re-installation.

If the first 3 numbers of the serial number match, it should work.

MyBook Duo usually is a spanned disk. UFS or R-Explorer should auto build it.

Just did a 1TB rosewood head change. Patient drive was clicking and not coming ready. With donor heads, clicked a little, came ready and ID's on PC3K. Both heads read, but head 0 is in rough shape.

I've got a 2TB Rosewood with at least 2 of the 4 heads reading and mirroring. Unfortunately, the MBR and BS are not readable and it would appear that this drive is encrypted. Should be interesting to see how we make out with it, assuming that client accepts the quote.

The motor balancing video is likely just a case where they tell you to slowly tighten screws opposite each other and to keep moving around with a gradual process. @LarrySabo - I believe that was referring to the manual about matching donor heads.

I now have the number of heads and preamp written on my Seagate donor covers. When I need a drive, I search for capacity and then match heads and preamp.

Good catch Jared, I didn't notice the USB PCB. Just assumed SATA with the Samsung drive. Yeah, I'd probably order the SATA cousin to this drive for parts and swap the PCB first, at the very least, to make it easier to work with after the head swap.

If the heads were stuck, it seems likely that head/media damage is the issue and not the cob.

Based on the stripe and assuming that the full 120GB overwrote every sector from the 120GB to a single drive, I'd suggest that the first 240GB of the data on the stripe is toast. That is unless the capacity of the files are smaller than the typical 64KB stripe size.

I'm glad you addressed the pin issue, as I was going to bring it up. That said, it might be helpful to use the short pin while the heads are over the platter and then exchange the pins after the ramp is removed.

I don't know, most of the time I'm able to unstuck heads without damaging them. I suspect the times that they are damaged, it is from being stuck. I got my new tools the other day and plan to play with the Seagate thins today.
