ddrescue can not handle every HDD problem, some times just powering up the drive can make things worse (to get a better understanding you're invited to watch the 14 parts from deepspar on youtube, this is the first one...). so.. if the data is not important i would say give ddrescue a shot, but...

Larry is right, "pclab's" initial problem was a bad PCB, that's why he cloned the drive with a SATA and realized the encryption problem afterwards, so a new PCB will do the trick too. ;)

in some models the model no. appear in the ROM for example: WD5000LM-11CKRS0 or WD30EZRX-00MMMB0 but not the SN

i found a few on ebay check if one of them is a match BTW it's very expensive

it's unique for every drive (it's like a SN (but in HEX)), so you can check if the PCB is original

SN is on the SA only (in WD of course)

have you tried to disable the bad head ? never believe the client check for yourself connect the PCB only read the ROM search the ROM (in HEX) for the WWN
