Why is my GE dishwasher making a loud grinding noise?

My GE dishwasher is about four years old and recently started making a horrible grinding sound during the wash cycle. It still cleans dishes okay, but the noise is unbearable during dinner time. I checked the filter and didn’t see any broken glass. Could this be the motor, the pump, or something stuck? Has anyone fixed this without calling a repair service?

I had the same issue last year. Turned out a popcorn kernel was stuck in the chopper blade. I unplugged it, removed the lower spray arm, and found the culprit wedged in the food grinder. Took twenty minutes and zero dollars. Check there before assuming the motor is shot.

I dealt with a grinding GE for weeks before discovering a plastic fork tip melted onto the heating element near the pump. The vibration made it sound like a dying engine. After clearing it, the noise vanished. If you need parts or warranty info, I spent time looking up the General Electric customer service number to see support options before deciding to DIY. Saved me a service call.
