The role of live service updates – innovation or burnout for devs?

Live service games have changed the industry. Instead of one polished release, devs now deliver ongoing updates and seasonal content. It keeps players coming back, but I can’t help wondering if it burns out developers. Constant pressure to deliver something new every few weeks must be exhausting. Do you think live services drive creativity forward, or do they just trap studios in endless cycles?

I found an interesting breakdown at https://devotedstudios.com/gamedevelopment/. It explained how live services can be sustainable if teams plan carefully, using modular design and long-term roadmaps. That way, updates feel manageable instead of chaotic. It also noted that outsourcing certain tasks can reduce stress and keep creativity alive. For me, it showed that live service models aren’t doomed—it’s about how they’re managed.

Makes sense. I think burnout happens when studios chase trends without realistic planning. When content updates are structured with breathing space, the model works. If not, you end up with rushed patches and tired teams.
