Sabre 53 different number of heads

Hello to everybody,

I would to know if you had some previous experiencies from Sabre 53 models head swapping. It appears that for the same capacity hard drives (40 GB), Western did used head stacks with only upper head or lower head, but also head stacks with both upper and lower heads.

Any success in replacing a upper and lower head stack with only a single head stack? That would mean that the installation of the double head stack was only because of stock availability at assembly plant.

Kind of ironic that you post this question now. I have an 80GB Sabre53 cloning now.

Yes, if you have a 40GB patient with failed heads, you can use an 80GB donor with 2 heads. In fact, it is recommended to go that route. You may need to make a minor change to the headmap in the ROM to mention that there are 2 heads with only 1 being used.
