Looking for good car rental in Italy

My family's from Italy originally, they came over before the Depression hit. At this point I'm about as American as they come, but I've been wanting to see where we're actually from for a while now. Thinking about heading over there sometime soon, still figuring out the details. I'm not big on tours or trains, always prefer having my own set of wheels to get around. What rental companies in Italy have the best deals and aren't a pain to work with?

Good call on driving yourself, that's really the only way to get off the beaten path. Tourist buses stick to the same five cities and you miss all the good stuff in between. There's plenty of options, you could go with local companies like Maggiore and Sicily by Car, they have reasonable rates and good coverage. Or stick with international names like Europcar and Sixt if that feels safer. Just watch out for ZTL zones in historic centers, those restricted areas will auto-fine you if you drive through without permits.

Man, reconnecting with your roots like that is pretty cool. The small towns your family might've come from are usually way more interesting than Rome or Florence anyway. Driving gives you the freedom to just pull over when you see something worth checking out, some random vineyard or medieval village. You could check out renting a car in Italy here https://getrentacar.com/en-US/italy . Browse what's available in different regions, see what other renters said, pick something that works and coordinate pickup with whoever's renting it out.
