On the PC-3000 in the WD utility there is a "heads test" function under the service area menu and/or one can read/write the log modules. Is there a safe module to do this on in the HITACHI-IBM-ARM utility? What is the best way to verify heads can read and write successfully before making SA modifications?

Go to DE, do a headmap and test them there, writing on a non-used sector.
Sure, but one wouldn't want to write to the drive before imaging it in a data recovery situation

The the sector is not beeing used, I don't see the problem, since it's not a forensic situation.

[post]16794[/post] I'm pretty sure that writing in DE only writes to clone/image and never the patient.

Could be, now that you mention it... But after knowing the LBA sector of the correspondent head, it can be done on the utility then,
