Has anyone ever accidentally signed up for a recurring political donation? How did you handle canceling it?

Hey everyone,

I was doing my monthly budget spreadsheet this past weekend and noticed a $50 charge on my credit card that I didn't recognize at first. After digging into it, I realized that back in February, I made what I thought was a one-time $50 donation to a political campaign. I was half-asleep watching the morning news before work and just wanted to show some quick support.

Apparently, I completely missed a pre-checked box hidden at the bottom of the screen, and now I've been charged $50 on the 15th of the month for the last three months!

Has anyone else dealt with this? I’m trying to figure out the easiest way to stop the charges. Should I try to track down an account on the donation platform to cancel it, or is it faster to just call my bank and have them block the merchant entirely? I feel so silly for not reading the fine print carefully.

Any advice or shared experiences on how to handle this quickly would be greatly appreciated!

This happened to my grandfather last election cycle. He thought he was buying a campaign bumper sticker and ended up getting charged weekly! He didn't know how to navigate the website, so I just had his credit card company issue a new card and block the vendor. Problem solved instantly.

Last fall, I was rushing to make a quick contribution before heading out to walk the dog, and I ended up getting billed monthly. I didn't even notice until I was balancing my checkbook for the holidays. I tried looking through my email for a cancellation link but couldn't find the original receipt anywhere. Eventually, I just ended up looking up a winred phone number online to get it sorted out directly. They stopped the recurring charge for me. Definitely double-check those screens next time.
