REQ assist w/ t'shoot & hopefully recovery

Hello, first time poster, short-time lurker. I read some previous posts that seemed applicable but haven't found what I need to get me past where I am at the moment. I am not a professional Data Recoverer but a DIY'ist. I'm quite tech-savvy but never done this, so humbly asking for your guidance/assistance.

I have a SEAGATE ST3000DM001 Barracuda 3TB that, while in a Virtual Machine Host (server), errored out at some point. I want the data back but not for the nearly-four-figure quote. So, having nothing to lose but the data, but the upside of adventure/education - and a glimmer of hope for recovery, I opened her up. The top platter looks like a mirror, not a scratch. The drive spins up, arm sweeps (park to center and back) ~9+/- times, then spins down. Because the drive spins fine, I swapped the exterior board (same firmware), w/ no change.

Since then I aquired a donor drive w/ matching firmware and a USB/serial/TTL interface. Before doing more hardware, hoping someone could guide me through what, if anything, I can do via software first. I captured below and get the English but not the hex/code. I found these commands but not sure which apply/hurt/harm. seagate-f3-terminal-command-set-t901-20.html

Any guidance on what's next?

Thanks,
DC

From that interface I get the following (putty, 38400, 8/n/1/off/off):

Boot 0x40M
Spin Up

1. if the drive doesn't need a head change, there is absolutely no reason why it would be a 4 figure number to recover by a professional. In fact, it should be less than $500...that said, it doesn't appear to be such a simple case
2. if a Seagate drive clicks and then spins down, it means that the heads and/or the surface are damaged
3. it is never good to power on a drive with the cover off (don't do that again)
4. before you ever attempt anything to adjust the firmware, you had better make sure you get a full backup first (not likely possible in this case)

Luke,
I appreciate your time spent replying.

All,
Would someone point me to what, if anything, I can do via software (serial port)? I found these commands but not sure which apply/hurt/harm. seagate-f3-terminal-command-set-t901-20.html. Any guides/videos to the serial commands?

Thanks!

It takes a lot of knowhow to work in Seagate terminal. It's not a push button type thing that we want to openly share a ton of info on. What will help in one case, will utterly destroy your chance of recovery in a different case. I posted that thread just to use as an easy reference of common commands for guys who already know what they are doing. If you don't know what something means, just assume it's not safe to use it.

In your specific case, you most likely have bad heads. So it's unlikely that anything can even be done via terminal.

If you press Ctrl + Z do you even get the T> prompt?
