USB 3.1 to M.2 Bridge

So I stumbled across this picture this morning while looking into SSD externals (sometimes customers ask about these):

It's a picture from inside of a WD My Passport SSD. Clearly, it's going from USB C to M.2 which could be really handy for times when we get M.2 SSDs from failed laptops for copying.

I'm just curious if the bridge will work fairly universally with any M.2 SSD or if it's locked to just the SSD model it's sold with. Or whether or not the bridge is doing any sort of encryption. Also whether or not it supports SSDs that can only work on the PCIe lanes and don't have SATA lanes.

It looks to have a lot more circuitry than the typical M.2 to USB adapters that only support SATA.

Has anyone tried experimenting with these bridge boards to see what they're capable of?
