heart murmurs, family doctor's advice

Hi,

Really of topic, but can use advice from the members here

For heart murmurs, the family doctor's advice was to take a pill called (IIRC) something like Isosorbide dinitrate, and it will pass.
it seems a bit odd to me to advice anything without seeing an ECG or with no being a cardiologist, but I thought because he has numerous years of experience behind as a family doctor.

What do you guys think ?

+1 to what @pclab said. I've had heart murmurs all my life and my family doctor sent me for an ultrasound that measures blood flow through the heart, They found blood flow was more than adequate so nothing to be concerned about. The concern is that blood is not thoroughly vacated from one ventricle due to mal-performance of a valve (which causes the murmur) and will some day form a clot that exits the heart, lodges in the brain and causes a stroke. You need to have it investigated, would be my advice.

No. especially as
without seeing an ECG or with no being a cardiologist
.

+1 Larry.

Book yourself into a different doctor and tell them your concerns. ask for an in depth explanation of your condition, and also what is likely to develop in the future if untreated, and with recommended treatment. If they say similar to the first doctor, ask them when you should go for a check-up to see if it is getting better/worse/staying the same.

It sounds like the first doctor didn't explain enough about his diagnosis and treatment, and if the second doctor only can help that, even if he gives the same recommendation.. I think it is worth it.

All the best!

In my opinion family doctors are sort of the PC repair techs of the medical world. The know a little about a lot of things, and a lot about very little. I'd get the opinion of a cardiologist before I'd settle in and be content with a certain medicine treatment.

I know my wife has been misdiagnosed with various things, which were later overturned or re-diagnosed as something different when we went to a specialist. She was even misdiagnosed as having asthma once for what turned out to be a benign heart valve issue. Always get a second opinion, that's my opinion.
