I don't know. I don't see a ramp. Are you sure it's not some special landing zone? The article is from 2012, BTW.

No it's definitely scratched. If you look closely you can see the actual slider is bent out to the right.

Yeah, I saw that but assumed the drive was a prototype and the "tab" played some part. Looking closer, I think I see the slider at the end of the HGA, without any support, which is probably what's bent out of place. How's that even possible? That's what happens when the PR people know nothing about hard drives. They made a poor choice of picture to grab from their stock photos, I guess.
