Insane Customers

So I get a customer who brings in a drive for recovery and is willing to pay anything to get the data back. Turns out the drive had scratches on the platters and couldn't be saved. So then after we tell them the bad news, they tell us they had everything backed up to Carbonite anyway and want to pay us to download it for them. Is it just me, or do some people just want to waste money? I mean, why would you opt for data recovery if you had a backup?

I had a Flash Drive from a teacher. She needed to do reports and had most done on the flash drive. I received it Friday I told her that if I had it over the weekend, I could know definate by sunday night if recoverable or not. So I work on it during weekend with no result, until I figure out the image cut problem and recover data. I ring her Sunday afternoon where she informs me "don't worry, I worked on the saved ones on my laptop and just re-did them all.
Gee, Thanks. Family was none too impressed about giving up weekend for nothing.

Maybe they have read of the painful experiences some Carbonite users have endured when they tried to download their backups, or the backup is woefully out-of-date.

Yes, true. Voice of reason shines through there Luke. In this case I said the same to the customer, She was very focused on getting reports done and this I think blinded her a bit to the situation, and I also don't think many realise what is involved in some flash recoveries.. so I let her off the hook for being too "insane" !! .. and as I do education drives for free, I think the story is ok to share ;)

I'm not too worried about this customer reading this, it's an older couple who barely know how to check their email. Besides, they wouldn't have known I was the owner of this forum unless someone mentioned it. Thanks Luke!

Now I get a guy who tells the front desk "there's some really bad stuff on here, so don't look at it whatever you do!" when he drops off a hard drive. Why do people say stupid stuff like this. Now I dare not look at the data for fear of accidentally seeing someone's gay porn or home pics of their 300Lb wife, but I can't help but wonder if I'm inadvertently helping someone get back a collection of illegal porn or something like that.

If you've got nasty nasty on your drive, just keep your mouth shut and most likely no one will even care to look at what the data is. I know I usually don't.

I do, I copy all music, videos, photos, credit card numbers, go through all emails, check all folders for hidden stuff, break into encrypted partitions etc..
at least that's what some people think we do because not only do we spend every waking moment just recovering the drives, but seemingly we have 100 hours spare to do this!!

Most people would be shocked at how similar everyone's drive actually is. for example, last 5 SD Cards I have recovered, 3 of them were mostly photos of warner brothers movie world on the gold cost. In fact the photos were so similar I could have interchanged them and each wouldn't have known! ;)
