First you need to check if the drive is in good shape or not, or if it is only a logical issue. You can use VictoriaHDD for that. If it starts to show physical issues, you should image the drive, for instance, with HDDSUPERCLONE, and only after that, use data recovery software to get the data back.

For the price that a 240GB SSD costs now, I think you should swap the HDD for a SSD. It will make your laptop work a lot better, and yes, most probably your drive is bad, even if that log only shows 6 bad sectors (which I doubt).

With Hirens, run VictoriaHDD and do a surface scan to the HDD. You probably have mad sectors on it, and sorry to say, you need a new drive.

You want to test a drive's health, right? Go for Victoria HDD for instance. Check surface of the drive. Also check SMART. Those will tell you how the drive is and if't worth to continue to use it or not

What you try to do is an image of that card ASAP. Try HDDSuperclone for that matter and then try to recover data from the image, I believe the card is bad.

How do you know that your Windows is really encrypted? Have you tried to access the drive using Live Linux CD ?

How long did it take between erasing the files and trying to recover them? TRIM can start to work in only a few minutes...

But if you misaligned them, then you might lose access to the other platters data. Always got for the headswap in first place.

Hey Usually you only swap platters if you have spindle issues. You don't swap platters because of alignment issues that make everything very hard. Just swap heads!

It's weird: first people do the mistakes and after ask for help. You never format a drive!! Why the hell you did that?? Your best approach is to use the demo of some good recovery software like UFS Explorer and see what you get with that.

Motor killing the heads it's not very common. Heads are not attached to the motor. Maybe if the motor is damaging the PCB, wich will also damage heads, but thats seems very unlikely

Seagate drives have some problems with degradation. They tend to do it over time. SA means Service Area (where firmware is written and where heads try to read)

Unfortunately that sounds as heads problem or even platter damage. Heads are trying to find SA and can't do it. If data is really important, take it to a lab to proper assesment. Replacing PCB would not solve it....

Usually Toshiba read well using Utility, but in this SMR model I don't think it will work.

If you don't hear the platter spinning, probably it's heads stuck in platters. If all goes well, it will not be need a head swap, so it might be a "cheap" recovery.

The best is to use hardware for it but since you don't have it, software imaging can deal with problems with the drive, like reset, skip bad sectors, etc, etc, that data recovery software is not prepared for.

It's not very perceptible... Is it making a beep sound or a click, click sound? These drive tend to have stuck heads though.

Why do you want to open it? To kill it for good? What you should try is to image the drive with HDDsuperclone to an healthy drive.

If the drive have bad sectors, it's better to get a new HDD and forget about that one. The risk of failure is high and you can loose the data. Better get a new HDD.

Probably it can have some bad sectors, or firmware issues. The best approach is to image it to another drive, for instance with HDDSuperclone and after search for the files with data recovery software.

For a drive to go to RAW mode, something might be wrong with it. It's advisible to make a clone, using for instance HDDSuperClone or DDrescue. After that, then you can start to use software to try to recover. You can try the demo of UFS, Rstudio, DMDE, etc...

If it's cracked, I don't think there's nothing to do. The best way is replace the PCB.

I had a case last week where I was swapping ROM to a compatible PCB number, and didn't even spin. The problem was that the PCB MCU chip was not the same. Got one with the same first 3 digits of the MCU and it worked.

Usually when you have that kind of symptom, is a translator issue. But as you say that you have a bad head, that could also be the problem. You can always try to regen translator and see how it goes.

Recover a file on a phone after 7 years of usage? That's 99.999999999% impossible, not to say 100%. How many times was it factory reset for instance? On a phone or any flash memory dependent device, after you delete a file or whatever, after a few minutes/hours it will be completely erased.

Edit NVRAM headmap to 0000 or 1111 and try.

The best way to know is to try since you have the drive with you.

The HDD is fully ID, with full capacity or not? If yes, you should try to image it first and only after do a software scan on it. Anything different, you should contact someone who can properly check what's wrong with the drive.

If it was a Seagate you could use some terminal cable adapter and check it, but on WD it's not possible.

Running a drive without the cover is not good... What did you matched to find a donor for heads? Have you at least any kind of terminal log, before you swapped heads? Probably you had some kind of firmware issue at first and now besides that, you have a physical issue...

I'm not sure of the price of Atola, but it seems that you are willing to do some more basic stuff, like imaging only, with control of heads and some FW tweaks. Take a look at Deepspar DDI. Maybe a better choice (and cheaper?) than Atola.

You should do a image of the drive first. Usually the imaging tools can disable the reallocation if you want. But I think you are taking too much importance to that.

But that's not the reason to delete some folders. Have you done a scan on the drive to search for the data you need?

It could be that the controller already is spitting out errors and now you can't get nothing. Probably you need a chip-off recovery.

If the partition was only formatted and not re-writed it might be recoverable . Try to use a good recovery software.

Usually what I do is open the enclosure and convert the drive from USB PCB to SATA PCB for better control. After that, I try to diagnose it. Do you hear strange noises/clicks? or does it spin OK? Could be a FW problem or a physical problem.

If the problems are the TVS, you can run the drive without them. However, if you want to keep the drive working on the client, I suggest you to replace them, since they are a barrier to avoid that a power surge don't go scorch the rest of the HDD.

Even with one bad head, doing a headmap to 00 or 11 it could eventually access SA and data. Of course it will be partial..

Have you tried to load the loader and read the 02 from the SA?

At the prices that new SSD are right now, I wouldn't spend too much on trying to repair a drive that already failed. You should check WHY it failed. Even if you can restore it, most probably you will have bad flash chips ending you to get a bad drive again.

Sometimes, we don't look at the log eheheh (it happened to me some times, when I use destination drives connected over USB).

Aren't you getting an error on WRITING on the destination??

So, an update. After calling the client, she said that particular folder was already copied from another bad HDD, so probably it was not well copied. The data she wanted (and that it's OK), are the photos. So, case closed :mrgreen:

Hi Guys I'm working on a drive here (a WD USB), that the issue is some reading problems on head 3. After mapping the files/folders with Data Extractor, I imaged everything without any major problems. But when analyzing the results, I can see that many files have 0 size.... These files didn't...

I believe they are OK.

If you are good at soldering, you can try to swap it. Read it without proper tools, is not possible, AFAIK.

Hi This is an English written forum, so try to write in English. About your question, it will depend on what you want: great quality or less quality. If you want to have the proper tool for data recovery, choose PC3000. If not, you have MRT or DFL tools.... Cheaper, but not the same quality....

When imaging a drive with PC3000, and "advertising" our work, we only show the green sectors (that only means that the sector was read with success), but on another tab, we usually see the files and folders (of course we don't show this or we blur it when "advertising" to protect clients data)...
