I stopped updating this when I finally discovered how to read the preamp from ROM directly. But, feel free to keep updating it if you'd like.

That and 90% of the DM series are 1 of 2 Preamps so you can be ready for most DM head swaps. You can also spot a pattern in the preamp lettering/numbering. Most of the less common preamps will be for oddball head and/or platter configurations in each group or drives with the new Seagate logo.

I've actually found that B3 and CB heads can be cross-compatible. Doesn't work in all cases, but I've seen it succeed enough to convince me it's not ever to be 100% ruled out.
