Not Spinning After Drop ST2000LM003 / HN-M201RAD/AV2

So, this case continues to not make sense based on what the customer describes, but I've solved it regardless.

So, after getting in a perfect match donor drive with same PCB, same FW, same P/N, etc. and putting the donor PCB on the drive does spin up. In terminal this is what I'm getting:

My initial thoughts again is that it's bad read/write heads, which would make sense given that it's described as having been dropped. But a drop doesn't explain how the original PCB went bad.

Just to be absolutely sure, I went ahead and moved the original ROM chip over to the donor board and.....whalla!!! It IDs, and I'm reading data from all heads at around 100Mb/s. So aparently Samsung must have more adaptives stored in the ROM code of these newer models than older ones did.

Perhaps the computer guy who brought it in didn't get the correct story from his customer of what happened either. I can't see how this is the result of a drop in any event.

[shadow=blue]Regardless, case solved and data recovered.[/shadow] :D

It could be a dead PCB..

As I said in the original post, the drive stopped spinning after it was dropped. Super unlikely that it's related to the PCB.

I said so based on experience I had once with a Samsung, and I have also stoped believing what Clients says...

Yeah, I'll admit, you were right in this one case. Even though there's no logical explanation based on the case info.

Could it be that when it was dropped there was some kind of electric problem? Over the USB cable or power supply....

I find that sometimes the client is led to believe the cause due to misdiagnosis by their technicians. That is, the technician says that the drive isn't spinning and assumes that it is because it dropped. So, he tells his client that the drive was dropped and not spinning and then refers them to a data recovery lab who then has to figure out what is going on.

I'm thinking it's something more to this effect too.
