HGST / Hitachi Headswap Experiences

Figure this is as good a place as any to keep track of the less than perfect donor matches that end up working out even though they probably shouldn't.

Here's mine from today:

Patient
Model: HTS725032A9A364
P/N: 0A73293
MLC: DA3247
Date: 05 Sep 10
Headmap: 1 2 3

Donor
Model: HTS725050A9A364
P/N: 0A72335
MLC: DA3212
Date: Jul 10
Headmap: 0 1 2 3

I picked it just because of the close date and same 7250XXA9 series. Imaged at full speed from all heads after swap.

When I'm sourcing a donor for a 3 head Hitachi, that is what I usually search for is a 4 head donor. Hitachi is very annoying in not having the same heads missing on drives that sometimes an exact match...right down to the day.

because the drive they were intending to build a 500Gb, but because one platter likely didn't pass the quality standard they clipped a head and made it a 320Gb instead
however the issue is you could buy four of them and all four might be missing a different head, so buying the full 4 head much trusted

Hi Lucky1001,

you are really lucky, 7200rpm vs 5400 rpm and the head is compatible, we never think about it, Anyway thanks for your sharing.

I've successfully used 7200 heads in 5400 drives in the past as well. Just as long as they're the same family (e.g. A9). It's not my preferred choice, but when it's a rush job and that's the donor you've got on hand it's worth a shot.

Hi Jared and Jimmy !
Yes, this heads are proved compatible.
It's difficult to find a Hitachi A9E/7200 heads donor in our city.
So we have to experiment with 5400 drives..)
Best regards.

Best topic ever I saw . Thanks for all sharing.

I have tested before (as I remember)

3200LPVX and LPCX . Maybe 3 try was compatible. But not noted all info. If head number same , also BEVT and BPVT compatible as I remember. I will add my experience later. (I haven't checked familes when tried them. Only checked model numbers)

I need advice about 5000BEVT. couldn't find donor for long time. (I am looking cheap donors lol. I usually collecting donors very very cheap prices ) What do you think about 7500BKPT . Both has 4 heads. I will try It after reading this topic.

You are talking about WD drives. This thread is about Hitachi/HGST head swap experiences. The one for WD drives is here:

Also you might be interested in these two topics as they tell you a lot about how to cross models and even families with WD:
