HddSurgery-Tools Too Expensive even for data recovery experts

We need to replace the spindle when it's really stuck (like some Seagate).
I think it's easier to replace the spindle (with the right tool) than swap platters.

I've done it just using an arbor press: http://www.harborfreight.com/1-ton-arbo ... -3552.html
along with a drive pin sort of like: http://www.grainger.com/product/STARRET ... 133155%3As
The trick is to use a ton of foil tape: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Nashua-Tape- ... /100048600
over the top of the drive (after removing the cover) to secure everything from moving. And then just cut a small hole in the middle where the spindle is. The tape keeps it clean inside too so you don't have to do it in the clean room. It's worked for me, though I've found that most often there's severe media damage after these seize.

Cool! I've read about "Pixels" in HDDGuru doing something similar, here. I think he is very much into fabricating tools for the purpose, and has been successful at recovering his data from a seized drive. Would be fun to try it, even if it's not economically viable, but I've so much other stuff to learn to do before that.

@abedalkareem

Our Spindle replacement tool is used for 7200.10 and 7200.11 drives. Speaking of the usage of some foil tape, it can hardly be done on this drives because the platters do not sit tight on the motor - beside rotating, they can also move back and forth on the spindle.

Because of this alignment, once removed platters can hardly be put back at the exact same place, and the data can't be recovered. The spacers between the platters are just one more problem.
Platter swapping is a risky operation and we found the solution to avoid this kind of risk.

@HddSurgery

thanks for the valuable information , Do you have a video to share explain the chaining spindle motor operation using your Spindle replacement tool ?
